Stagg is Buffalo Trace's annual barrel-proof beast — the uncut, unfiltered little brother to the legendary George T. Stagg, named for the 19th-century whiskey baron and known simply as "Stagg" since dropping the "Jr." in 2022. Batch 26A is the Spring 2026 release, the first of the year, bottled at 129.3 proof (64.65% ABV) from barrels matured roughly 8 to 9 years in Buffalo Trace's historic Kentucky rickhouses, built on the distillery's low-rye Mash Bill #1 — the same recipe behind Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and E.H. Taylor, here presented with nothing removed and nothing watered down. Reviewers describe concentrated brown sugar opening into cherry cola, grape jelly, and dark fruit, with vanilla, dark chocolate, clove, and baking spice over a dense, oily, full-bodied palate, finishing long and warm with charred oak and lingering cherry. The interesting consensus on this batch: it's a surprisingly polished Stagg — Amongst the Whiskey called it refined, "no longer throwing around its proof as the rough and rowdy locker room brute of old," and The Bourbon Road praised its structure and proof-to-price value. Give it several minutes in the glass, then a few drops of water to unlock extra sweetness and fruit. A serious high-proof sipper and an easy pickup for Buffalo Trace collectors.
